Eureka: A Night In Global Dynamics

Last week on Eureka, there was a voracious metal eating bacteria that attacked all of the towns structures. That crisis was averted only for the town go into chaos again. Henry Deacon tells Sheriff Jack Carter that the metal eating bacteria has starting attacking the iron in humans. He says that it will be a matter of hours before everyone in the town is suffering from the effects. Alarms start to go off all over the Global Dynamics building. The main office that Henry, Beverly, Allison and Kevin are in plummets to a secure subsection of the building. Nathan Stark is made acting director of Global Dynamics. It is bitter sweet because if he doesn't evacuate everyone from the building, they all will be subject to "thermal cleaning". It's a type of security "feature" that kills all organic matter and sounds like a metric buttload of fun.

Henry and Beverly confront Allison and tell her that she has to let them help Kevin. Allison is like, "Yeah right!" Kevin is like, "Totally not!" Henry is really scary in this scene. He starts to yell about taking Kevin away. I don't like him and I'm bothered by it. Beverly starts to babble about the Akashic Field. Because Kevin has been inhabited by the artifact, she says that he has tapped into the same stuff as DaVinci, Tesla and Einstein. She also says that she and Henry want to take Kevin to a "consortium of people" that will protect him from being a government lab rat. This is the same lady that is responsible for Henry's girlfriend's death, spying on citizens and she's fresh out of GITMO. How does she imagine that she's credible? The geeky money shot of this episode is the subatomic reconstructive transport - a teleporter. Bev gets her panties in a twist because the technology was banned by the Stockholm Treaty. Allison says that it was built before that but never disassembled. Henry says he is going to use the tech to get Kevin out of the facility.

While all of this heady stuff is going on in the office now bunker, Jack, Nathan and Taggart are trying to rescue Allison and Kevin. Hazmat suits were torn and wise cracks ensued. The building even went HAL on everyone. It shot at them, mimicked personnel and tried to microwave them. There was even a moment where the group thought there were zombies in the building!

Henry reveals that a byproduct of using the teleporter is that it filters out contaminates and illnesses. The machine needs to use an old DNA profile of Kevin's. It needs to know his biological configuration before he was inhabited by the artifact in order to restore him to his normal state. Read: human reset button. All of this information was beginning to be too much for Allison so she starts a cat fight with Beverly. (The second cat fight this season might I add.) Kevin has a talk with Henry then Kevin tells Allison to stop her hair pulling and listen to Henry. Now all of a sudden, Kevin wants Henry's help.

Stark and Jack get to the morgue and look at the contaminated body that Henry showed as evidence that the metal bacteria had started attacking humans. Stark took one look at it and told Jack that the corpse had been mutilated by acid. There is no contaminate in the building. This whole incident was faked by Henry. This knowledge doesn't help them because the building is still trying to kill them. Fargo eventually finds a way to hack the building and save the day.

Henry set Kevin up to perform the procedure but Beverley wants to stop him. She says this is the closest that anyone has been to the Akashic Field in years. Doing the procedure on Kevin will destroy it. She pulls a weapon but Jack gets there in time to stop her. Nathan tells Henry to stop the procedure because Henry doesn't have the correct DNA profile on Kevin. They get the correct profile and Kevin is restored. It is still unsure if he is still autistic but he doesn't have powers anymore. Beverly used teleporter to get away. Henry turns himself into the authorities.

...OH!!!! ...and Nathan proposes to Allison!

The good: The artifact story is wrapped up. The humor and timing of this show is always perfect. When these actors get together it's like magic.

The bad: Kevin and his story does nothing for me. His character doesn't fit and this was a perfect opportunity to kill him off or make him go away. The Artifact and the Akashic Field was a little too hippie for me. There was a mystery to it but when it was put in Kevin, I didn't get it anymore. It's a scientific show and there just seem to be problems with the mysterious Artifact plot. It seems like the writers tried to do a good job with what they were give but something went wrong somewhere.

The ugly: I hate how Henry was handled. It feels like he was written into a corner. I thought Kim's death was supposed to make him an interesting character. Instead of moving on, he went really dark and has put several people's lives in danger because of his pain. I don't like how irresponsible and unstable they made him. He went from a very fun absent minded professor to a mad scientist. Joe Morton is an important part of this show for me. The "Henry" character started out as such a great role model. Now he's in jail and I don't know what they are going to do to his character to make him fun again. :(

I wonder what next season is going to be like? I can't wait!

Top 5 Most Fashionable Science Fiction TV Shows

This list includes current shows that are still airing. This list does not refer to costuming but stylish modern clothing.

[5] Lost
Not because of the ratty clothes they wear on the island but the clothes in the flash backs. I knew that the stylist of Lost paid attention to fashion when I recognized a Catherine Malandrino dress on Sun.

[4] Smallville
It's all about Chloe; from her hair to her personal style. She always looks awesome. She can go from youthful casual to news office preppy and still look chic.

[3] Eureka
Allison and Nathan always look fantastic. Nathan's suits drape off of his body like a dream. Allison always looks classy. Sometimes she goes power suit, sometimes she goes business casual. She is at her best when she's in a flirty dress. Chloe has a unique youthful style. Her first season was a little rough around the edges because they let her dress herself. I can tell that someone has put their foot down.

[2] The 4400
The hair in The 4400 is amazing. I will go as far to say that 4400 has the best hair in science fiction. Diana's sister, April went from being a tragic proto- goth to a fabulous bird. I'm still drooling over the outfit in her last appearance. Though I didn't like the character, Alana always had on something funky and urban. Kyle's imaginary friend, Cassie has a great artsy, coffee house thing going on. They even brought in a new girl to give the geek boys fashion tips!

[1] Heroes
Two words: Grandma Petrelli. I've had such a fashion crush on her every since I saw her in her Burberry jacket. Nothing gets me all aflutter like Burberry. She always has on a diva mink collared/cuffed coat. When I grow up, I want to be as stylish as Angela Petrelli.

Honorable Mentions:
Charmed; The stylist on this show took risks. Some of them were wild but for the most part the Charmed Ones looked really great.
Buffy; The first couple of season were HORRIFIC! In the later seasons, Sarah Michelle Gellar became a bit of a fashion icon. She is still seen at fashion events. (Go back to blonde!)
Star Trek: The Original Series; Even though this is a costumed drama, Star Trek inspired me to learn how to sew.

Eureka Gets a Third Season!

As if it wouldn't! I'm so happy about this. This show is doing great things and deserves it success! I'm on pins and needles waiting for Tuesday so that I can see the season finale. I can't wait to see what happens next season.

Eureka got THREE million NEW viewers???!?! That is fantastic!

On another note, they really haven't kept up with the podcast this season. I really enjoyed hearing the behind- the- scenes insight that we used to get. Colin Ferguson? What's up man?

from The SciFi Wire:
SCI FI Channel has ordered a third season of its original series Eureka, giving a green light to production of 13 new episodes, the network announced.

Eureka will begin production in Vancouver, Canada, early next year for a summer 2008 premiere.

Eureka brought more than 3 million new viewers to the channel in its second season.

Eureka: All That Glitters

All That Glitters is the first of a two- parter episode that leads to the season finale.

The show kicks off with Zoe's new boyfriend, Lucas giving her a cheap looking bracelet. I know, I know... At that age, it's the thought that counts. Diamonds bro... diamonds. :)

Jack and his new girlfriend, Callie make plans to go fishing for the weekend in a cabin. Zoe approaches Jack for permission to have a sleepover while he is out of town... with boys invited. Of course Jack freaks out. Meanwhile, the locals are abuzz because the Pythagoras statue in the middle of the town has mysteriously turned to gold. Jack calls on Henry. Henry can't make heads or tails of it. Allison approaches and Henry leaves to avoid her. Jack wants files from Global Dynamics and Allison reveals that he has to make an official request. WHOA NELLIE!!! Not only was Allison wearing a black, cranky power suit, she was pretty cold for the entire episode. This thing with Kevin is really getting to her and now her relationships with Henry and Jack are suffering. I guess I'd be a bit on edge if my son became telepathic. Actually, I think it would be cool. Although, there are somethings running through my mind that a kid shouldn't have access too....

Next, there is a dog and pony show with the D.O.D. They are dropping off a "package" in the care of Nathan Stark. The package turns out to be none other than Beverly. Turns out, she was in GITMO for betraying her country. *rolls eyes* She admits she was involved in Kim's death. She's so desperate not to go back to GITMO that she is willing to make a deal with Allison. Of course, Allison wants to know more about The Artifact. You know... I'm beginning to thing that this "Artifact" is the same thing as " The Orb" from The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.

Ok, ok... back on track.

Vincent put in a call to Sheriff Carter because the patrons were stealing silverware. Everything metal in the diner was turning to gold. You can always count on Vincent to be melodramatic. He called the customers "greedy little genius vultures". Jack even had to yell at Fargo to put down a napkin dispenser. He could only stare and say, "but it's so shiny". I fell out laughing. The humor in this show is always on beat. I never have to try to like this show and that is what keeps me coming back.

Everyone starts to leave the diner and go outside, Jack goes after them to see what is going on this time. The Pythagoras statue is starting to deteriorate. It's like it's being eaten away and chunks of it is gone. It becomes too weak to stand so it crumbles and falls over. Henry discovers that the gold effect is a bacteria and it is also virulent.

Beverly and Nathan talk a bit more about The Artifact. She reveals that it is capable of human interface but can not disconnect. Nathan knows this and slips out that he needed to help "him". Beverly picks up on this and feels she has another bargaining chip.

No! I haven't forgot that the glowingly, sexy Micheal Shanks is in this episode. He's playing a naughty professor who is trying to turn stuff to gold. Mmmmm.... I love naughty professors. There was some technobabble about hydrochloric acid and some "Alchemist's Curse". Apparently, Babylon, Atlantis and Mayan civilizations fell because of this. Interesting!

While trying to figure out how to stop the gold virus from spreading, the towns structures become unstable. Anything with metal is starting to collapse. It's time for another Eureka Evacuation TM. They evacuate this town more than the citizens of Smallville go to the hospital.... or Kirk takes off his shirt.

While the town is falling apart, Henry finally gets to confront Beverly. I was SO scared for her. I thought Henry was going to assault her. He actually threatened to kill her. Scary! Kudos to Joe Morton, that man is brilliant. Bev starts to talk fast. She reveals that she left the device that Henry found in Kim's office. She wanted him to find it. They talk a bit more about The Artifact and Henry tells Bev that The Artifact is inside Kevin, Allison's son. They also talk about something called the Akashic Field. It's some hippie, Edgar Cayce type of stuff. :)

In mid-evacuation and collapse crisis, Nathan figures out a way to reverse the effects of the gold virus. Jack has to go to the bottom of the building to apply the fix, it's the same place that Fargo got trapped. If Jack succeeds, there will be smiles and giggles for everyone. If he fails, the building collapses on him, Fargo and everyone else. Of course it works like magic and the day is saved.

Of course, that isn't the end of it. Jack learns that the bacteria has jumped from metal to humans. This means that the gold will start eating human flesh. Jack appropriately responds, "I hate this day."

It gets worse, Henry releases Beverly and confronts Allison. I'm not sure what's going to happen but these two have had a cat fight in the queue for quite sometime. Some emergency lift is activated and Allison, Henry and Bev are taken to the bottom of Global Dynamics.

DUN DUN DUNNNN!!!
To be continued...

The Number One SciFi Show is Wrestling?

Well slap my ass and call me a Targ. I guess someone at NBC/ Scifi Channel knows what they are doing. I'm still hostile at the idea of wrestling on the Scifi Channel. I'm not write- a- letter- to- the- studio hostile, just whine- on- my- blog hostile. :) When I look at the other shows that are top on this list, I almost want to hang my head in shame. Maneater? Ghost Hunters? Sasquatch Mountain? The Scifi Channel must be doing something right for some people. Congrats?

Eureka: Maneater

Eureka: Maneater

(Oh-oh, here she comes) Watch out boy she'll chew you up
(Oh-oh, here she comes) She's a maneater

I couldn't resist. :)

Eureka has a utilities system that resembles the human digestive system. The air conditioning, plumbing, lights and water are all hooked up to one network. The regular maintence guy is missing and the system starts to malfunction. Because everything is connected, one failing piece of the network means that others will also eventually fail. If that wasn't enough, some ancient pheromone bacteria gets on Jack and every woman in the town "wants" him. The ticking clock on this episode is to fix the utilities before the town blows. We also find out that if the pheromone doesn't dissipate that women will eventually turn violent towards Jack. To make matters worse, there is a chance that the pheromone will be released into the ventilation. This means that every man in Eureka will become irrisistible (they already are because scientists are sexy) but it also means that every woman in Eureka will eventually try to kill them and eat them for food.

When the mysterious powder was first introduced I immediately thought about Star Trek, Spock and This Side of Paradise. Spores that make you fall in love/lust. Not entirely original but I loved the way it was presented. Eureka is a show that takes some of the classic, widely- used science fiction themes but spins them in a really fresh and new way.

I was impressed with the digestive system utilities network. I love the clever things in this town but it always seems like the scientists are air heads. When things go wrong in Eureka, they go WAY wrong. They've almost had to evacuate the town 3 times this season. I'm beginning to wonder about about them. They must be book smart but not common sense smart. :)

At the end of the episode, Allison gives Nathan access to The Artifact. He isn't supposed to be in there because he doesn't have official clearance anymore. His access means that Henry gets locked out. Henry is pissed. This isn't going to end well. Nathan is convinced that if he has access, he can use the Artifact research to help solve the issue with Kevin, Allison's son.

Next week: Mega Snake's Michael Shanks. :P

Eureka: God is in the Details

Eureka has been smitten with Revelations- type Biblical events. I was really excited to see how a science heavy show would treat religion. I liked this episode for so many reasons. It did not insult the beliefs of religious people and it stuck to a scientific outcome.

There's a new church in Eureka. Shortly after the pastor complains that she isn't getting as many people in the church as she'd like biblical events start to manifest themselves in the town. Zoe loses her ability to speak, Allison starts glowing like an angel, fish water turns red and the whole town goes dark. People start to suspect that something religious going on.

There were some great lines in this episode. I loved the mention that Global Dynamics may be over a Hellmouth. Jo's new boyfriend holding his breath until she talks to him. Jo mentioning she owns a grenade launcher. (Good to see I'm not the only female that thinks grenade launchers are hot!)

This episode shines with the explanation of the "religious" events. Teryl Rothery was our mad scientist of the week. She was so grief stricken at the loss of her husband that she was trying to create a portal to heaven so that she could join him. Not to sound harsh but it sounded like a really nerdy means to commit suicide. The side effect of the portal was infrasonic frequencies and it's reactions with different elements it encountered. This is was what was going on in the town, nothing mystical. We discover that if the portal is shut down, the incidents would stop happening and its effects would reverse. It's a bit of a happy, typical ending but I liked it.

The twist of this episode was Kevin and his "abilities". Nathan seems to think that Kevin's powers healed Allison. What I saw was Allison getting better when the portal was shut down. I'm still not convinced about Kevin having any powers yet. They'll have to develop that a bit more for me to buy it.

Next week: Jack becomes a chick magnet. This is going to be hilarious.

Eureka: Sight Unseen

Eureka: Sight Unseen

After last week's stupid scientists tricks episode, I was a bit skeptical about this week's invisible man episode. I was impressed with the handling of the invisibility theme. The science of it was glossed over but the episode was still enjoyable. I liked the mention of the moon rocks and how people that think they've seen moon rocks have seen fake ones. My problem with the moon rocks is that they seemed to make a big deal out of them at the beginning of the episode only to drop it. Also, on first look, this episode seems like a filler. It was and wasn't. We find out more about Allison's son and how he was changed. Henry reveals what he know about Kim's death to Nathan and gives him the evidence. I think this will bite Henry in that cute bum of his but this was a HUGE step in the story. Zoe drives alone for her first time and has a passionate kiss with a guy from class. Sure Lupo throws him in the clink for it but it was worth it. It was mentioned in earlier articles that the Nathan/Allison/Jack love triangle was going to have a definite conclusion at the end of this season. I think the first appearance of Callie as Jack's new love interest is the beginning of the end for the Allison/Jack thing. Callie's introduction felt a bit forced but I like her. There was a lot of information to process in this episode. Next to all of those developments, the invisibility theme seemed like a B story.

Next week: Eureka hit by a biblical plague? Science and religion. This ought to be good.

Eureka: E-MC...?

Eureka: E-MC...?

This wasn't the best episode of Eureka. Nathan Stark and Henry Deacon are all aglow because they are going to recreate the "Big Bang" using a device they invented called a Chaotic Inflation Device. Allison Blake has just recruited one of those geeks you hear about that get hired after they hack a government website. The new geek in town, Zane is to remain in Jack's custody until he is deemed trustworthy. There were some great lines here between Zane and Lupo. He bought her lingerie with the credit card information that he stole from Jack. He proves how smart he is by breaking out of an unbreakable prison cell. Because of this, Jack thinks that Jake is responsible for all of Eureka's scientists recent decline in intelligence. The whole town can't remember anything, the scientists are watching cartoons, playing with yo-yos, remote controlled cars and meanwhile the "Big Bang" experiment is in danger of breaching it's containment field. Zane finds a ways to stop Global Dynamics from exploding but the scientists are still "stupid". As it turns out, it wasn't this experiment that turned the town silly, it was a batch of cloned chicken meat. In an attempt to be humane, the chicken farmer was growing this meat without the chicken and it lacked key ingredients because the meat's growth wasn't regulated by the chicken's brain.

Whew!

I know I said earlier that this wasn't my favorite episode but I did actually like it. I just didn't buy the stupidity of the cast. They just weren't stupid enough. I wanted to see something believable. I'm not sure what it was but this is something the cast didn't pull of to me. There's a first time for everything. I hope we don't have to go through that again. I like this crew smart and quick- witted.

Another Favorite: Eureka

I have such a TV show crush on Eureka. I can't say anything bad about the new season either. It is back with as much wit as it had last year. I love the writing and the characters. Because the show has rely technobabble, I'm glad to see that it remains incredibly silly. Should be called Silly Scientist Tricks... Gone Wild. :) I think that's the appeal for me. You get the classic sci-fi themes in a fresh and witty way. The cast being collective eye candy dish doesn't hurt either.

I want to live in Eureka.

So far this season, Henry Deacon and Jack Carter are the only ones who remember the alternate timeline from last season. Jack isn't handling it well because he's still expecting Allison to be like she was before so that they can have the relationship that they had in the last timeline. It's not happening and she's actually starting to patch up her relationship with the beautifully handsome Nathan Stark. [added (thanks Michael)] That was until Henry made a "Forget" device and used it on Jack but not himself. Now Henry wants to work for Global Dynamics so he can figure out what happened to his lost love.

Some of the episodes themes this season are human combustion, a deadly human force field and an insane weather man. The character chemistry is like clockwork and just an amazing treat to watch. These guys bounce off of each other so naturally. In one scene, Henry was translating technobabble for Jack and it was so perfectly timed. This show is filled with that. They aren't shy with the special effects and tech. Every episode has something that will give you a geekgasm.

I'm looking forward to there rest of the season because I want to see what is up with the psychiatrist lady and this business with the artifact.

Now what does all this mean?

Well, take for example the Series Premiere - Pilot. The 3.2 rating represents the episodes household rating, which indicates that 3.2% of all households in the U.S. watched this broadcast.

Eureka managed to air 7 episodes before ratings dipped below 2.0. The lowest point, as you can clearly see, was Purple Haze with a 1.4 rating. An average of 2.05 makes Eureka Sci Fi's hottest property of the summer!
This is why our favorite show is getting a second season!!! YAY!!!

I can't wait.

Quick and Dirty Thoughts

I'm going to A.D.D you through my thoughts on the latest shows.

LOST
LOVED IT! Just when I thought there were no more angles on the plane crash, BAM!, they hit us with "The Others" perspective. It doesn't feel like a re-hash either. I'm totally interested in their view and approach to the plane crash. I can't believe how good this show is. It seems like this show could out do Babylon 5 in well-thought out arcs and plots.
ABC's 'Lost,' Wednesdays 9/8c

SUPERNATURAL
The best new show that you may not be watching. It's a cross between Angel and X-Files. It's witty like Buffy and feels a little like Smallville but really good in it's own way. If you like hot guys, there are two brothers that are a treat to look at. The dad isn't bad either... well .... that was before..... They also have a hot chick of the week for the fellas.
If you miss demon hunting, rituals and mystical beings, catch this show! ...and unlike Blade, it made it to it's second season. (oh yes! I'm going to drag the Blade thing on for awhile. I'm still pissed!)
Supernatural.tv

Heroes
REALLY LOVE IT!!!!
The first episode concerned me a bit for some reason but the second episode sealed the deal for me. Hiro is my absolute favorite mainly because he is a Trekkie :) Most of the stories are intriguing... actually all of them are. It's super powers without being campy or too serious. The show really puts the "everyday" in the whole story. It's accessible without making you feel dirty for watching a sci-fi show.
Instead of "The Cigarette Smoking Man" looks like we have "The Eyeglasses Wearing Guy". He's growing out that mustache to twirl. Hopefully he doesn't muhahaha us too soon.

Battlestar Galactica
The Story So Far.... (BSG Recap Show) was a great idea and refresher course in Battlestar Galactica. If you are thinking about jumping into BSG but don't feel like watching the last few seasons, this will bring you up to speed. Over the course of the show, I'd forgotten a lot of the things covered in this recap show. In all of the details of their lives I forgot that these people were looking for Earth. It got me curious again.... well... panicked. I've heard about how bad the original show was when the crew got to Earth. I'm wondering how our modern show would handle going/coming to Earth. Intriguing.
For now though, the story is so far from Earth that it's depressing. I eventually watched all of the webisodes on scifi.com. I must say that I've overcome my initial disappointment, resentment and reluctance to this coming season. The recap show calmed my disgruntled spirit and sparked my curiosity again. That and I trust Ron Moore a bit. I hope he doesn't "do us wrong".

Numb3rs
This little FBI crime drama that uses math to solve crime has been on for THREE, count them THREE seasons. AHH AHH AHH AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
This show makes you feel smart just by watching it. I'm not sure if it has improved my IQ any but let's just say it does for the feel good factor of this entry. Charlie Eppes (Mr. Universe from Serenity - David Krumholtz), Don Eppes (Northern Exposure - Rob Morrow), Omar Epps (just kidding) and Alan Eppes (Judd Hirsch) make up the power house family of moderately cute men that help solve crime using math, FBI training and common freaking sense, respectively.
This show throws "It's math and I can't use it in my every day life" back in the faces of those under- achievers who've said this. This show also seems to have a math problem for EVERYTHING. There's even a website dedicated to explaining the problems on the show for you and of course it's called We All Us Math Everyday.com.
If it seems like too much technobabble for you, the show is balanced by family issues like the death of their mother, Charlie's relationship/not relationship with a math chick, kidnapping and of course EXPLOSIONS. If you try hard enough, it's possible to totally ignore the math on the show.
NUMB3RS on CBS

Doctor Who
Oh... look... another show that made it to the second season. We have a new, new Doctor. He's not as hot as the old, new doctor but he'll do. If the beginning of the season seems slow and doesn't pull you in, wait it out, the season gets better. I think Doctor David Tennant is best when he's angry and goofy. I won't spoil anything but the devil episode is awesome. The Olympic episode is awesome too especially the torch scene. You'll love the Cybermen and the Daleks toward the end of the season.
BBC - Doctor Who - The Official Site

My DVR cut off the end of the Eureka finale so I'll come back with my thoughts on that later.
