Top Science Fiction Places in Second Life in 2007

[edit: I have no idea why all of this blank space is here.]

SciFi Ranter Girl's Top Science Fiction Places in Second Life in 2007

I've scoured Second Life looking for the best sci- fi places. Here is the list in no particular order.

The links below are SLURLs they take you to your destination in- world. You have to set up a Second Life account before you can go explore. It's relatively painless and free.

CSI: NY Does Second Life

If CSI: Vegas is classic and nerdy. CSI: Miami is the ghetto, red- headed step child. CSI: NY is the hip, savvy one of all of them.

Last week CSI: NY did time travel. They were even geeky enough to include a Doctor Who reference and sound effect. This week, the show is heading into my favorite virtual world, Second Life. I'm SO excited about this. I can't wait to see what they are going to do in my world.

If you still haven't explored Second Life, you owe it to yourself to do so. Later next week, I'll compile a list of recommended places in- world. If you haven't signed up, you can use this link to do so. My user ID is Trinity Hartunian. Look me up and IM me in-world and I can show you around. Jvstin Tommorrow and I have already hung out. He's taken to Second Life like a fish to water. Fly my beautiful bird, fly! .... er..... Swim my beautiful fish, swim! :) JStrider is in there as well as a few more sci-fi geeks.

This episode entitled "Avatar" will air on CBS; Wednesday, October 24, 2007.

From the NYTimes:
But in the episode for Oct. 24, Taylor, played by Gary Sinise, finds himself entering the computer-based virtual world known as Second Life, walking (and sometimes flying) around three-dimensional, animated Manhattan landmarks, recreated by a technique called machinima, and pursuing not a suspect but an avatar.
They are also planning an in- world experience and event!

If all goes well, Mr. Zuiker said, the episode will contain two 30-second promotional messages directing viewers to CBS.com, promising a “live simulation” letting them experience Second Life for themselves. “You can pick one of 12 avatars,” Mr. Zuiker said. “It will download in five to nine minutes. My own avatar will be there to greet you.”

Mr. Zuiker said the first level of participation, the simplest, will allow viewers to walk around the representations of New York buildings and then visit a CSI lab, where they can play basic forensic games, like facial recognition.

The second level is much more elaborate. It consists of a game called “Murder by Zuiker,” based on a murder plot that Mr. Zuiker created and the Electric Sheep engineers have transformed into a scene in Second Life. Mr. Zuiker will leave clues around the murder scene. He will post and rank the 100 people who come closest to his explanation of the murder, and, he said, the winner will “get a virtual gift for his or her avatar.”

The final stage of game play will allow “CSI” fans to become CSI investigators. They will receive a field kit and tools, get a chance to interview suspects and be given the opportunity to solve the murder featured in the episode. The final gimmick of that episode is that it will end in a cliffhanger: it will not be resolved until an episode in February.

CSI:Second Life

CSI:NY will visit the virtual world of Second Life in the fourth season. I'm so excited about this!

'CSI: NY' Writer Spills Season Four Details
“Nina [Tassler, the CBS executive has been talking about this for a while… [Episode five] is basically a forensic investigation into Second Life, an online social network, a metaverse where you go on, you create an avatar and cruise different worlds. Part of our investigation is going in there. Mac Taylor has to create an avatar and go and hunt down a killer who is using somebody's avatar to commit a murder. It's a little bit of a CSI: New York sci-fi internet pursuit with a big action sequence at the end of the episode. It's fun; it actually has a big moment for Mac and Adam because Adam sort of becomes this big expert in the world of Second Life. He's done it before, so he sort of guides Mac into the how or the where of it all. I think it's going to be a fun episode. It's very different,” he revealed.

William Gibson To Visit Second Life

How cool is that? I'm gonna be lazy and copy and paste from the publisher.

In Cyberspace everyone can hear you scream

"Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation ... A graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding."

In 1984 William Gibson invented the word cyberspace in his seminal novel Neuromancer and today, nearly 25 years later, a growing and significant number of people are spending increasing amounts of time and money inside 'computer generated constructs', whether they be perhaps the most analogous to Gibson's idea of cyberspace (Second Life), game-like (World of Warcraft) or social (facebook).

So when we first started dabbling in Second Life we quickly realized that something interesting Penguin could do would be to bring William Gibson into this strange new place, a place he seemed to have predicted and described years ago (though he disputes this). Unsurprisingly many of the older residents of Second Life are hardcore sci-fi and cyberpunk fans and dotted around the virtual landscape are a number of sims with a suitably dystopian theme. And perhaps now we have a great opportunity to connect an author and his fans in a totally new, and in this case totally appropriate, environment.
Per New World Notes, Gibson will be at Nexus Prime. The appearance is slated for August 2. To attend, IM Jeremy Neumann or join the SL group "Penguin Readers".

Blog Anniversary and New Look

I decided to refresh the look of the blog a bit. I put my Second Life avatar in an Orion Slave Girl skin. Let me know what you think :)

My big move is over with and I'm a little less stressed. I should be back to regular blog posts in no time.

Also, I just noticed that my blog anniversary was last month. I started in June 2004. Wow!!! Three years of girlie squealing and nitpicking. In that time, I've started a podcast and became a Second Lifeaholic. I've seen some good shows come and go.... and of course some bad ones that would not die or got the boot. When I started, iTunes didn't have TV downloads, now I can get most of the shows that I want on demand. We now have our first SciFi internet TV show, Sanctuary. Webisodes are the new black.

I don't always update regularly but when I do....c'mon.... you know you love it. Here's to three more years :)

Sigler in Second Life

Scott Sigler will be having a press release in Second Life this Thursday, December 7th @ 7pm PST. I can't wait! I'll have to get my avatar a new outfit and go to the virtual salon.

The press release is for his latest podcast novel The Rookie. The main character, Quentin Barnes will be chatting with us online.

I've been listening to The Rookie and I have to say that I love it. It was hard for me at first because of all of the football but somewhere after the 5th episode it didn't matter anymore. The football quit being the main focus and I became impressed with this massive world that Scott built. It's extensive. He made all of these alien races, different planets and a back-story like you wouldn't believe. I would love to hear more non-football stories in this world too.

I must admit that even after all of the explaining, I still don't get football. Every time in life when some guy has tried to explain football to me, my mind shuts down and my eyes glaze over. The only way to snap me out of it is a trip to the mall. Understanding football is not really necessary to enjoy this story though.

Apparently, Scott and JC are having some sort of "measuring" contest. It's cute and hilarious to see them at it. I hope it's all still fake because I CAN NOT and WILL NOT choose between the two. Anyway, if you want hear some of Scott's "jib-jab" about it listen to Bonus Episode #8.5. His "high-road" bit at the end is brilliant.

The coordinates for the transport are Podcast Island 83, 53, 25.
